(Modern take on Post-and-Lintel) |
This week we learned about the earliest types of interior design and architecture. In prehistoric times, starting with the Stone Age, there were 3 main types of structures; Cliff Dwellings, Mud and Thatch, and Stone structures. The very first type of dwellings known to man are caves, that date back all the way to 17,000 B.C.E.
From there came the Neolithic period, which is construction made from stone. One of the most notable monuments from this period is Stonehenge, used for rituals. Of course, residential homes were also built during this time, which were made from stone bricks, sometimes using mortar, leaving openings to allow light and people to enter, and the hearth being the center of the home. An example of this is the Skara Brae, which is a Neolithic village. These homes were built of stone but no mortar.

The modern cliff house (shown above) was designed by an Australian architect company called Modscape. Their values as a company are design, innovation, and sustainability. They displayed these characteristics well with the Cliff house, inspired by how barnacles cling to the ship's hull. The product was envisioned as a series of stack housing modules that were then anchored to the cliff using engineered steel pins. Overall, this house is the perfect example of what their company stands for and is an inspiration to architects all over the globe. (Modscape.com)
Sami this is so cool! I love your examples of modern versions of the things that were used back then! They are beautiful examples that fit very well with the ideas! I also love how yo describe all the the buildings and architects.
ReplyDeleteI love all of the pictures that you added in and the modern takes of these things.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you summarized the lecture and compared the prehistoric structures to modern day versions of them.
